Stump Grinding in the Andalusia Area

That stump isn't going to rot on your schedule. Ground below grade, it disappears under new sod — and the mower stops finding it.

Why grind instead of wait

A pine stump in south Alabama can sit there for a decade, sprouting, drawing termites and fire ants, and beating up your mower deck. Grinding takes it out in an hour or two: a carbide wheel chews the stump into mulch several inches below grade, the hole gets backfilled with the grindings, and in a season you'll forget where it was. If you're replanting grass in the spot, say so — the pro can grind deeper and you can swap the chip fill for topsoil.

What it costs

Stump grinding is priced mostly by the stump's diameter and how many you have. One ordinary stump typically runs $100–$350; surface roots that need chasing, very large hardwood stumps, or tight access can push it higher. Multiple stumps on one visit almost always price better per stump — if you've got three or four scattered around, quote them together.

Having a tree removed too? Grinding at the same visit is the cheap way to do it — the equipment is already there. Mention it when you get your removal quote.

Stump questions

How deep is the grind?

Standard is several inches below grade — enough to sod or seed over. If you plan to replant a tree or set a post in the same spot, ask for a deeper grind up front.

Can I plant grass over it right away?

Yes, once the grindings settle or are swapped for soil. Fresh wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down, so a little starter fertilizer helps new grass in that spot.

Will grinding stop the sprouts coming up?

For most species, removing the stump and the top of the root mass ends the sprouting. A few stubborn species can send up shoots from remaining roots for a while; they mow out.
